Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wants to create a health and care neighbourhood in Crewe with a new Leighton Hospital at its heart.
This means:
- a modern hospital building
- health services working closely together
- more care provided closer to where you live
Healthcare needs are changing. People are living longer, and more people are living with long-term health conditions. Because of this, we must improve the way care is delivered.
Our aim is to:
- help people stay well
- provide support in the community where possible
- make sure hospital care is available when it is needed
Why is a new hospital needed?
The current Leighton Hospital was built in the 1970s using a material called reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC). This material does not last forever, and the existing building has now reached the end of its structural life.
For this reason, the hospital will be rebuilt as part of the Government’s New Hospital Programme. Our scheme is included in the first group of hospitals to be rebuilt, known as Wave 1.
